By WFTT

15 January 2025

As part of its year-end activities, WFTT staff and board members convened for a one-day reflection meeting to assess the progress of the 2024 annual implementation plan.

The interactive event, held at Johari Rotana Hotel, on 12th December 2024, focused on celebrating key achievements, addressing challenges, and collaboratively co-creating solutions.

Speaking during the session, WFTT Board Chair Dr. Penina Mlama expressed her appreciation for the efforts of both staff and board committees throughout the year.

“The work you have done this year in implementing your plans is truly remarkable. You faced challenges, but you developed strategies to overcome them. Today is a day for reflection, generating new ideas, and addressing areas that need improvement. Let it be a day of advice and open discussion in a relaxed environment,” Dr. Mlama stated.

During the discussions, participants highlighted that 2024 has been a particularly successful year in areas such as fundraising, driving systemic change, and challenging oppressive structures.

However, they also noted several challenges, including shrinking political space, authorities failing to fulfill their responsibilities, limited funding despite high demand, and an unstable socio-political context.

To address these challenges, participants proposed several solutions; including Supporting movements in advocacy efforts, including the "naming and shaming" strategy, enhancing communication strategies for more effective information sharing, Building conceptual clarity within the organization, strengthening compliance measures.

Additionally, participants engaged in discussions about wellness and its importance in their daily work. Facilitating the wellness session, Mary Rusimbi emphasized the impact of the current challenging and divisive context. "The current environment affects us individually and as a movement. Our sense of wellness has been compromised," she remarked.

Ms. Rusimbi highlighted the importance of identifying the causes of unwellness and encouraged participants to develop organizational wellness plans, create safe spaces, and address root causes affecting their well-being.
